How to Calculate Manufacturing Margins (With Formulas and Examples)

Step 1: Get unit cost right first
Every margin formula depends on a trustworthy cost per unit. Build it in this order:
- Convert all ingredient quantities and purchase prices to a common base unit (grams for weight, each for countable items).
- Add packaging: bottle, lid, label, band, carton, insert.
- Add direct labor for the batch, at a loaded rate that includes payroll burden.
- Allocate overhead — facility, equipment, QC, compliance, cleaning.
- Divide total batch cost by good units produced after expected loss.
Step 2: The core formulas
- Gross profit = selling price − COGS
- Gross margin % = (selling price − COGS) ÷ selling price × 100
- Markup % = (selling price − cost) ÷ cost × 100
- Price from target margin = cost ÷ (1 − target margin)
- Contribution margin = price − variable cost per unit
- Break-even units = fixed costs ÷ contribution margin per unit

Gross margin tells you about a product. Contribution margin tells you which products to prioritize when capacity is the constraint. A SKU with 55% margin that ties up a filling line for eight hours can be worth less than a 38%-margin SKU that runs in two. Compare contribution margin per constrained hour, not per unit.
Step 5: Compare estimated vs. actual
Estimated margin is a hypothesis. After each production run, recompute using actual material consumed, actual yield, and actual labor hours. The gap between estimated and actual margin is the single most useful number in a custom manufacturing shop — it tells you whether your standards are real.
